This hymn exalts the grace and mercy of our God who though He could be exacting and punish all sin chooses in his love to offer forgiveness. Its words are based on the contrast between Psalm 130:3 moving into verse 4.

Lyrics
1. Unclean and vile, how can I stand,
Putrid and sore, a sinful man.
If you did count my every flaw
Death would open its ugly maw.

Chorus: But there's forgiveness with you, Lord,
By Your mercy I'm restored.
My wayward soul has found release.
My hope in You has brought me peace.

2. My soul it should have been abhorred,
But You came in and rescued me.
There I did stand in dreadful awe;
I trembled neath the sight of Thee.
